Counseling Education

by Michael Bustamante

For the human services-oriented individual, gaining counseling education may be an appealing prospect. Many vocational schools and colleges offer courses designed for individuals who want to learn to be a professional counselor. At the vocational level, counseling training can be a springboard to a graduate degree program, as the occupation generally requires a minimum of a Master's degree, as well as applicable licensing or certification.

Counseling courses can include topics such as psychology, counseling theory, therapy and intervention strategies, interpersonal relationships, evaluation and assessment methods, adolescent and child therapy, group therapy, marital and family therapy, ethics, business practices, and associated regulations applicable to the practice.

Successful graduates can go on to a 4-year college or university to complete their education in counseling for occupations including counselors for Schools, Colleges and Universities; Rehabilitation; Mental Health; Substance Abuse; Family and Marital Therapy; and other related fields.

The perfect candidate for a beginning course in counseling is the person who is interested in helping others to live more peaceful, healthy and productive lives though mental health care. If you are unsure as to whether you would be able to sustain a career in the field, why not take some entry-level courses from a vocational school or community college? There are even some good online counseling schools where you can get your feet wet and learn the basics.

Career outlook is promising for those who have attained a graduate degree in the field, as the rate of employment is expected to grow much faster than average through this decade. The well-educated, professional may earn an annual salary in the range of $27,000 - $51,000 or more, depending on the specific occupation and region of employment.
